The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation agreed to pay $1.8 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to protect California inmates from a 2022 data breach.

The California Department of Corrections data breach settlement benefits individuals whose protected health information or personally identifiable information was stored on the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation platform that was accessed by an unauthorized user in January 2022.

The California Department of Corrections data breach reportedly compromised the protected health information and personally identifiable information of 1.4 million inmates. Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit claim the department failed to protect their information from cybercriminals.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is responsible for the state’s prison system.

The California Department of Corrections hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $1.8 million settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the California Department of Corrections data breach settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of participating class members and the amount deducted for attorneys’ fees and other costs.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 14, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for March 7, 2025.

Class members who received a postcard notice regarding the California Department of Corrections data breach settlement do not need to take any action to benefit from the settlement. Class members who did not receive a postcard notice must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 14, 2025, to receive settlement benefits.
