Consumer Safety Technology LLC, also known as Intoxalock, agreed to pay over $1.74 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it violated California’s privacy laws by recording telephone calls without consent.

The Intoxalock settlement benefits individuals with a California phone number or address who had one or more calls with Intoxalock sales representatives between May 18, 2021, and Feb. 8, 2022.

According to an Intoxalock call recording class action lawsuit, Intoxalock recorded telephone calls with California consumers without warning them or explicitly obtaining their consent. Plaintiffs in the case say these actions violated California’s Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), an extensive privacy law that requires businesses to receive consent from all involved parties before recording a phone call. A similar class action settlement over alleged CIPA violations was reached with Allstate in 2024.

Intoxalock is an ignition interlock device company that offers devices to help prevent drunk driving.

Intoxalock has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.74 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the Intoxalock settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement. Payment estimates are not available at this time, though all payments are capped at a maximum of $5,000 per claimant.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Feb. 10, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Intoxalock call recording settlement is scheduled for March 3, 2025.

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 12, 2025.
