The Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine settlement benefits individuals whose private information may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized party as a result of the Coastal Orthopedic & Sports Medicine data breach in June 2023.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, Coastal Orthopedics failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that could have prevented the data breach. The data breach reportedly compromised sensitive patient information, including Social Security numbers, the plaintiffs contend.

Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is an orthopedic practice in Florida that provides services such as joint replacement, sports medicine and physical therapy.

Coastal Orthopedics hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.4 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine settlement, class members can receive reimbursement for documented data breach losses, credit monitoring services and a cash payment.

Class members can receive up to $10,000 for documented monetary losses resulting from the data breach. These losses can include credit monitoring costs, unreimbursed bank or credit card fees, communication expenses, fraudulent charges and more.

Additionally, class members can receive two years of free credit monitoring services. These services include one-bureau credit monitoring, $1 million in fraud and identity theft insurance and medical information monitoring.

Class members can also receive a cash payment from the settlement. Class members whose Social Security numbers were compromised in the breach can receive three times more in pro rata payments than class members whose Social Security numbers were not compromised. Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement.

The deadline for exclusion is Aug. 13, 2025. The deadline for objection is July 14, 2025.
