Columbus Regional Healthcare System (CRHS) agreed to a $1.175 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach.

The Columbus Regional Healthcare System settlement benefits individuals whose private information may have been involved in the CRHS data breach on May 21, 2023.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, Columbus Regional Healthcare System failed to protect consumer information from a data breach that compromised sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and health insurance data. 

Plaintiffs in the case argue that the healthcare system should have implemented stronger cybersecurity measures to protect patient data.

Columbus Regional Healthcare System is a North Carolina-based hospital system that offers a range of medical services.

CRHS has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.175 million settlement to resolve the data breach lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Columbus Regional Healthcare System settlement, class members can receive up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach. This reimbursement includes compensation for unreimbursed fraud losses, professional fees, credit expenses and more. Class members must submit documentation of these expenses to receive reimbursement.

In addition to reimbursement, class members can receive a pro rata share of the settlement fund. According to the settlement website, each claimant is estimated to receive $50, but exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is March 3, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the CRHS data breach settlement is scheduled for April 9, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by April 2, 2025.

Documentation of unreimbursed losses, such as bank statements, credit reports, receipts, invoices and other relevant documents.
