A $1.125 million Philadelphia Inquirer settlement resolves claims that the newspaper shared subscriber activity with Facebook.

The settlement benefits individuals who had a digital subscription with The Philadelphia Inquirer between Oct. 1, 2019, and Jan. 16, 2024, and who used Facebook during that time.

The privacy class action lawsuit claims The Philadelphia Inquirer intercepted subscriber communications, including Facebook IDs and viewed video information, and shared them with Facebook. These actions allegedly violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act and the Pennsylvania Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance Control Act.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is a local newspaper publisher based in Pennsylvania.

The Philadelphia Inquirer hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.125 million to resolve the privacy class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Philadelphia Inquirer settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Payments will vary depending on the number of valid claims filed and other factors. No payment estimates are available at this time.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 27, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for March 26, 2025.

To receive Philadelphia Inquirer settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 27, 2024.
