An Iraq war veterans lawsuit seeks compensation for those injured in IED attacks, challenging the Islamic Republic of Iran’s involvement in the Iraq war.
According to the plaintiffs, who are families of those killed in the Iraq war as well as veterans who fought in the war, Iran offered support to terrorist groups that waged attacks against the U.S. and coalition forces from 2004 to 2011. They claim that this support was given in the form of arming, training, funding, and directing the groups, in violation of U.S. sanctions that prohibit Iran from sponsoring terrorism.
This Iraq War veterans lawsuit is one of a number of Iraq War lawsuits that challenge Iran’s alleged involvement in the Iraq war. Additionally, two other lawsuits claim that at least six major international banks helped to fund terrorism that injured U.S. soldiers. The lawsuits claim that the money was laundered illegally in the United States, and part of the illegally laundered money was sent to terrorist groups in the Iraq war.
The family members participating in the Iraq War veterans lawsuit claim that they would not have lost their family members if Iran had not supported terrorist groups in the Iraq war, and the veterans claim that they would not have suffered their particular injuries if it weren’t for Iran’s involvement in the war.
The families and veterans made their claims to a federal judge who is anticipated to make a ruling within a few weeks or months. However, there is no jury in the Iraq War veterans lawsuit, and Iran sent no attorneys to defend itself against the claims of illegal involvement in the Iraq War.
The trial for the Iraq War veterans lawsuit ended in early December. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly stated that she was convinced that there was indeed evidence that Iranian organizations sent weapons, training, and advancement to Shia groups that attacked U.S. troops in 2011. Allegedly, the evidence that convinced Kollar-Kotelly included expert forensic analysis of the attacks as well as detailed reports on the connections of Iranian entities to the attacks.
The judge also heard testimony of those injured in terrorist attacks in the Iraq War, as well as from families of those who were killed by them. Some people were killed or injured by IED and EFP devices.
Tragically, 63 percent of coalition deaths in Iraq were caused by IED explosions. IED and EFPs are types of explosives, some of the most common weapons used against U.S. military members, that may have been funded at least in part by Iran.
If the Iraq War veterans lawsuit is successful, the families and veterans could relieve compensation from a fund that is already set up to compensate victims of state sponsored terrorism. Already, victims of state sponsored terrorism have received over $1 billion in assistance from the fund. According to experts, as many as 6,000 U.S. citizens may be edible for fund compensation if they make a valid claim.
