The high number of reports of DePuy ASR hip replacement complications has led DePuy to pull two of its hip replacement devices from the market.
The two hip replacement systems pulled because of an increased risk of DePuy ASR hip replacement complications are the DePuy ASR Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. These devices were found to cause a high rate of hip revision surgeries.
According to court documents, Johnson & Johnson conducted an internal investigation on DePuy hip implant systems in 2011. The investigation revealed that in around 40 percent of patients implanted, the implant would cause DePuy ASR Hip Replacement complications and fail within five years.
Although this study was conducted in 2011, the results of the study were not made public. Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, DePuy, continued to market the device as a safe and effective hip implant option, allegedly downplaying the potential complications.
DePuy Hip Implant Basics
The DePuy ASR hip implant is a popular choice for hip replacement surgeries. Indeed, over half a million Americans have undergone hip replacement surgery so far, thousands of whom used the DePuy hip system. However, despite its popularity, the device has also been the target of thousands of hip implant lawsuits, alleging serious injuries and complications.
Even though the device was recalled in 2010, thousands of Americans may still be implanted with the device. These patients may be at risk for future complications warned about by the FDA.
DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Complications
According to reports, patients who are implanted with a DePuy hip system are increasingly likely to experience complications due to a design flaw with its metal-on-metal components.
If the device is not positioned properly in the first place, or falls out of position over time, the metal components can rub together and release particles into the blood stream and surrounding tissue over time.
Possible DePuy ASR hip replacement complications include the following:
- Pain at or near the hip joint
- High rate of failure
- Need for hip revision surgery
- Metallosis (caused by elevated levels of metal)
- Cardiovascular problems
- Neurological problems
- Vision or hearing damage
- Thyroid damage
- Kidney damage
- Other systemic side effects
Complications like these can cause lasting problems for patients. They often require further surgery for implant removal and replacement. Any additional surgery always increases risk for the patient, as well as make future implant failure more likely.
Filing a DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuit
The recalled DePuy ASR hip implant systems have been used in over 90,000 hip replacement surgeries, placing thousands of patients at serious risk.
If you or someone you love has suffered injuries because of DePuy ASR hip replacement complications, you may be able to receive compensation by filing a hip implant lawsuit. While legal remedies cannot take away the pain and suffering of complications caused by hip implant system failure, they can lead to compensation that will help with medical bills and lost wages.
