doctor looking at hip Xray report in hospitalA Utah man has filed a Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant lawsuit against the manufacturer claiming he had to undergo revision surgery because of device failure.

Plaintiff John F. underwent a total right hip arthroplasty with the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant in September 2007.

Soon after his surgery, he claims he was afflicted with increasingly debilitating pain, discomfort and soreness.

In his Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant lawsuit, John alleges that he suffered personal and economic injuries as a result of the device. He says he had to undergo an additional surgical procedure and suffered from permanent harm because of severe metal poisoning and metallosis.

John claims that he experienced lost wages and future loss of earning capacity as well as medical expenses. He also says that because of the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant, he suffered permanent harm.

Several years later, in 2015, he underwent a revision surgery for a failed right total hip implant because of heightened levels of cobalt and chromium, or metallosis.

The problem with revision surgeries, according to his Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant lawsuit, is that they are more complex and the possibilities of complications are greater. This is due to a reduced amount of bone in the hip due to the original surgery.

Revision surgeries also have a much higher risk of dislocation compared with original hip replacement surgery. In one study, recipients of revision surgery suffered dislocation at a 14.4% rate compared to 3.9% of those who simply underwent the initial replacement surgery.

John believes that Biomet continued to promote their Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant even after they knew that there were numerous and serious complications associated with it. He also believes that Biomet concealed “bad data” when they met with orthopedic surgeons, including John’s surgeon.

Had the plaintiff or his surgeon known of the inherent risks of the Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant or that there were far safer and reliable alternatives available, neither he nor his surgeon would have chosen to use this particular device.

The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant System

The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant system was marketed as being superior to conventional hip implants because of the range of motion.

Biomet claims that their system gets an average of 154 degrees of motion, more than any other metal-on-metal hip implant system. They have promoted their device as having achieved “maximum range of motion, stability and minimal wear.”

Even after reports of high rates of M2a Magnum failure over many years, Biomet has still maintained that their Biomet M2a Magnum hip implant device is superior and safe.

This Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00062-BCW in the United States District Court for the District of Utah.
