IVC filter pulmonary embolism

A Florida woman recently filed a blood clot filter lawsuit against Cook Medical, claiming that the company’s defective device caused her injury.

Plaintiff Coralee A. filed her lawsuit against Cook Medical over its Gunther Tulip Vena Cava Filter. According to the blood clot filter lawsuit, the plaintiff was implanted with a Gunther Tulip Vena Cava Filter on July 25, 2010.

While the blood clot filter surgery was meant to protect Coralee from serious complications, the device itself allegedly caused its own serious side effects.

Coralee claims in her lawsuit that the device was defective, and came with various blood clot filter side effects.

The blood clot filter lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including failure to warn, design defect, and negligence.

Blood Clot Filter Lawsuit Allegations

A blood clot filter, sometimes known as an IVC or inferior vena cava filter, is a device used to stop dangerous blood clots from entering a patient’s lungs and heart and causing serious damage.

However, an increasing number of blood clot filter lawsuits suggest that these medical devices themselves are defective and can cause major blood clot filter side effects.

Blood Clot Filter Side Effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a number of adverse event reports in the last several years. Hundreds of patients have reported a variety of major blood clot filter side effects, including punctured organs and migrating filters.

Blood clot filter side effects can occur if the device itself is defective, but can also happen if the filter was not placed correctly in the initial blood clot filter surgery.

Given the severity of some of the potential blood clot filter side effects, some blood clot filter lawsuits allege that the devices are not worth the risk to patients.

Blood Clot Filter Lawsuits

Coralee’s blood clot filter lawsuit, as well as others like it, allege that Cook Medical is responsible for actions and inactions that led to injury from their defective blood clot filter devices.

Lawsuits claim that the Cook Medical was aware that the Gunther Tulip Vena Cava Filter is defective, but continued to market the product as safe and effective.

The FDA recommends that, if other treatments prove ineffective, these blood clot filter devices should be used for as short a time as possible to reduce risk of serious blood clot filter side effects.

If you or someone you know has suffered from blood clot filter side effects after going through blood clot filter surgery, you may be eligible to file a blood clot filter lawsuit.

While filing a lawsuit cannot repair the physical damage from a defective blood clot filter device, it can help to compensate for the financial expenses of medical bills or lost wages caused by these injuries.

The Blood Clot Filter Lawsuit is Case No. 1:14-ml-2570-RLY-TAB, in the U.S. District Court for the Indianapolis Division of the Southern District of Indiana.

In general, IVC filter lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
