- Where: The ZuPreem class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.
A new class action lawsuit alleges that ZuPreem pet food products are falsely advertised as “natural” despite containing synthetic ingredients.
Plaintiff Catherine Riggs-Bergesen claims in the ZuPreem class action that she purchased the company’s Natural Bird Food For Medium Birds from a PetSmart store in Kingston, New York, in February 2025.
Riggs-Bergesen claims the ZuPreem pet food she purchased was falsely advertised as “natural” despite containing multiple synthetic ingredients, including pyridoxine hydrochloride, citric acid, D-calcium pantothenate, folic acid, tocopherols, dl-methionine, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, and copper sulfate.
“Had Ms. Riggs-Bergesen known that Defendants’ ‘natural’ representation was false and misleading, she would not have purchased the Products or would have only been willing to purchase the Products at a lesser price,” the ZuPreem class action alleges.
Riggs-Bergesen wants to represent a nationwide class and New York subclass of consumers who purchased the ZuPreem pet food products.
ZuPreem class action argues consumers willing to pay premium for ‘natural’ pet food
Riggs-Bergesen argues that health-conscious pet owners are willing to pay a premium for products labeled and advertised as natural, which they believe are safer for their pets than non-natural products.
The ZuPreem class action lawsuit claims these actions violate New York General Business Law and product warranties. The plaintiff is seeking monetary relief for consumers and an injunction to stop the companies from continuing the alleged false marketing practices.
Recently, there have been several nationwide pet food recalls and class actions. Three companies also allegedly sold products deceptively marketed as “natural”, while two companies recalled pet foods contaminated with salmonella.

I purchase bird food based upon the claim it’s natural. Please add me.
I feed Zupreem regularly to my flock of 7 birds. While not surprised, it is disturbing. We even feed our birds as clean as possible, just like we eat. Non-GMO muffins & mix and various other clean products. It’s a shame you can’t trust anything out there.
