Widely-prescribed antibiotic, Zithromax (azithromycin), used to treat a variety of common infections, has been linked to liver and kidney side effects.
While most users suffer from only mild, time-limited side effects of the drug, others may experience permanent damage from its use.
Zithromax has been linked to organ damage affecting both the kidney and liver. These two organs are the primary organs that promote the body’s natural detoxification. When these organs become impaired, systemic health issues can result.
Kidneys can be damaged by kidney infection, kidney disease and kidney failure. Interstitial nephritis can also occur, which is an inflammation in the interstitial cells that are found around the tubules of the kidneys.
All of these lead to the kidneys not performing at their full capacity, and their ability to remove waste products from the body are reduced.
Zithromax can cause liver inflammation (hepatitis), abnormal functioning of the liver, jaundice, hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity or disease), liver failure, or even death of some portions of the liver, called hepatic necrosis.
When the liver is damaged, its ability to detoxify chemicals, metabolize drugs, filter blood and control blood clotting is compromised. If the damage to the liver or kidneys is severe, it can be fatal since the body is overloaded with toxicity and begins to shut down.
Other Zithromax Complications
Liver and kidney damage are not the only complications related to Zithromax use. As a result of using Zithromax, some individuals may develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a severe allergic reaction.
This condition causes the skin to blister and fall off in sheets, and is considered a medical emergency requiring hospitalization.
Heart problems have also been linked to Zithromax use. Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), and heart attack have been reported.
Zithromax, also referred to as Zmax, comes packaged in blister packaging commonly referred to as a Z-Pak. Its popularity stems, in large part, from its shorter course.
Two capsules are taken the first day and the remaining four capsules are taken once a day for the next four days compared to the more typical antibiotic course of twice a day for 10 days.
