Zithromax Eye InjuryZithromax users may be surprised to learn that the popular antibiotic may come with serious side effects including Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes.

Zithromax Adverse Effects in the Eyes

Azithromycin, generic name for Zithromax (also known as a Zpak) can have devastating side effects of which the consumer is not aware.

The FDA has long been aware that an adverse reaction to Zithromax is a skin condition called Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). SJS can result in irreparable damage to the vision of the patient.

But even more importantly, some patients uses Zithromax to treat trachoma. Trachoma is a contagious bacterial eye infection. It is the second leading cause of blindness.

Trachoma begins as an itching and irritation of the eyes and eyelids and then progresses to include swollen eyelids and pus drainage. If left untreated, trachoma can result in blindness.

However, recurring bacterial eye infections have been connected with Zithromax. Researchers believe that Zithromax may suppress what the body would normally do to fight against trachoma, the very infection that Zithromax is trying to combat.

A Journal of the American Medical Association study recently studied Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes. It found that individuals who were diagnosed with trachoma and treated with Zithromax were more likely to suffer recurring trachoma bacterial infections.

Another survey questioned over 20,000 people and found that the amount of Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes were surprising. Over 60 people reported blindness while taking Zithromax.

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic that treats various bacterial infections including include respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, ear infections and sexually transmitted infections.

Zithromax works by destroying the reproductive system of bacteria, thereby stopping its replication. After the bacteria cannot reproduce, the immune defense system attacks the remaining infection.

Zithromax is preferable for many reasons. It is versatile, easy to use and requires less time than many other antibiotics. Because of the reduced time, many patients opt for Zithromax.

In addition to many minor side effects, Zithromax often carries with it more serious side effects like SJS and Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes.

The History of Zithromax Adverse Events

Up to 4 years ago, the FDA warned drug maker, Pfizer, that it needed to do more to warn the public and medical community about the problems associated with Zithromax, including SJS and Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes.

A letter from the FDA was sent to Pfizer warning them about they needed to address consumers about possible risks and that they needed to cease downplaying the possible side effects. Allegedly, the marketing materials put out by Zithromax and Pfizer are false and misleading.

It omits facts, makes unsubstantiated claims and downplays risks and side effects, according to the claims.

Many people that consider filing Zithromax lawsuits allege that Pfizer has not done enough to protect the general public from the risk of SJS and Zithromax adverse effects in the eyes.
