Zinbryta Erythema Multiforme Reportedly Linked Stevens Johnson SyndromeZinbryta erythema multiforme is one of several serious complications that patients and prescribing doctors need to look out for, which has also been indicated in several injury reports, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Zinbryta erythema multiforme is described as an inflammatory skin disorder, that reportedly has the potential to develop into Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Similar to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, Zinbryta erythema multiforme causes circular patches of red skin with purple centers, shaped like targets that form throughout the body.

Zinbryta erythema multiforme is usually caused by an infection, most commonly caused by herpes simplex virus, but there have been documented cases of adverse drug reactions. Zinbryta erythema multiform is often diagnosed after doctors analyze the lesions, with early signs of the condition often consisting of mouth sores.

While most cases of erythema multiform resolve themselves, with most case lasting between two to four weeks, serious cases can develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

Overview of Zinbryta Skin Reactions

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an extreme allergic drug reaction, which is often identified by red and purple skin lesions. These skin lesions often peel off and expose inner muscle and tissue to potential infection, which further compounds the patient’s condition.

Patients can also develop lesions in mucus membranes of their body, including the inside of the mouth and eyelids. This can cause problems in swallowing and vision, with some patients even going blind.

Due to the severe skin damage patients suffer, patients are often treated in the burn units of hospitals to replenish their flesh. However, even with this treatment, patients often suffer some form of permanent skin damage and vision damage.

This an extremely rare reaction that has been linked in over 100 drugs, but is more likely in patients with drug sensitivity and if more than one drug is being used. Due to the severity of this condition, Zinbryta erythema multiforme is taken very seriously and should be treated as soon as possible.

Zinbryta erythema multiforme is just one of several serious complications associated with this medication. In fact, the drug was recently recalled from the global market. Manufacturers Biogen and Abbvie announced they were voluntarily recalling Zinbryta from the market on March 2, 2018, after receiving reports of inflammatory brain disorders like encephalitis and meningoencephalitis.

At least 12 cases of Zinbryta encephalitis have been reported throughout the world, with three of the cases reportedly fatal. Zinbryta was only recently approved by the FDA in 2016 to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), which is often prescribed to patients who have not responded to other treatment drugs.

Multiple sclerosis is a condition in which the immune system attacks the protective sheath around the nerve cells in the central nervous system, which causes extreme movement difficulties that will progressively get worse without treatment drugs.

The FDA stated that it has been aware of Zinbryta’s “complex safety profile” since its approval, and is currently working Abbvie and Biogen to ensure “a well organizes withdrawal from the market in the United States, and to ensure that healthcare professionals have the information they need to carefully transition their patients using Zinbryta to another treatment.”
