Lawsuits concerning Zimmer hip replacement complications continue to join multidistrict litigation that has consolidated hundreds of cases filed by patients who experienced problems that required early revision surgery.
Between 2006 and 2008, approximately 12,000 people received Zimmer Durom Cup hip implants before Zimmer temporarily suspended sales due to patient complaints and doctor warnings about problems associated with the artificial hip implants. These hip problems included:
- Premature failure
- Hip implant loosening
- Metallosis or metal blood poisoning
- Tissue damage
- Pseudotumors
- Revision surgery to correct hip replacement complications
Zimmer Hip Lawsuits Detail Severe Complications
On June 9, 2010, the U.S. Judicial Panel of Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all federally filed Zimmer hip lawsuits into a single jurisdiction under U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton. The Zimmer hip MDL allows plaintiffs to share information and other resources to help expedite their claims for compensation.
By joining the Zimmer hip MDL, those who claim they were victims of severe hip replacement complications will still get their own individual trial, but it will move faster since repeated discovery won’t be an issue.
While hip replacement complications vary case by case, the allegations raised in the Zimmer hip lawsuits are very similar, with patients saying that warnings about hip implant problems were not adequate to prepare them for the risks they faced. Some say the devices were faulty, while others experienced metallosis (metal poisoning).
The Zimmer Durom Cup contains metal on metal components which can lead to poisoning when the pieces grind together and flake off into the body or blood stream. This, along with other faulty aspects, has led to the need for further surgeries which can be dangerous, painful and costly.
