The data breach occurred when hackers gained unauthorized access to the health system’s email accounts, compromising the names, addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers and clinical information of patients.

The plaintiffs claimed that Yale New Haven Health was negligent in its data security practices, failing to implement reasonable measures to prevent and detect unauthorized access.

They also alleged that the health system did not notify affected individuals in a timely manner, causing them to suffer anxiety and increased risk of identity theft.
