A Kentucky man has filed a lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging that his late wife’s death was caused by a Xarelto lower gastrointestinal bleed.
The plaintiff, Royce H., filed this lawsuit on behalf of his late wife, Loretta H. According to the lawsuit, Loretta began taking Xarelto at the direction of her doctor in March 2016. However, shortly after she beginning to take the drug, Loretta suffered from a major Xarelto lower gastrointestinal bleed, causing serious pain and suffering.
Loretta was quickly hospitalized because of her injuries. Ultimately, it’s alleged the Xarelto lower gastrointestinal bleed led to her death on April 3, 2016, less than a month after she initially began taking the drug,
Loretta left behind her husband, Royce, who alleges in his lawsuit that his late wife’s death from a Xarelto lower gastrointestinal bleed could have been avoided had Janssen given adequate warning about the drug’s risks. Instead, the company (a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson) actively concealed the drug’s risks, placing patients in danger of serious and even life-threatening side effects, like Loretta’s Xarelto lower gastrointestinal bleed.
Royce filed his Xarelto lawsuit on March 14, 2018, on multiple counts, including but not limited to negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, and wrongful death.
Basics of Xarelto
Xarelto (also sold under its generic name, rivaroxaban) is a relatively new blood thinning medication, manufactured and sold by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Since it was first introduced to the market, Xarelto has become one of the most widely used blood thinning medications available.
However, a growing number of lawsuits are being filed over complications allegedly stemming from the medication, including possible Xarelto caused death. According to such lawsuits, Janssen knew about the dangerous side effects linked with Xarelto, including excessive bleeding problems and potential death, yet failed to adequately warn both consumers and the medical community, thereby placing patients at serious risk.
In 2012, after less than two years on the market, more than 2,000 individual Xarelto adverse events reports were filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA. While many of the patients involved in these reported adverse events recovered, 151 of these cases resulted in fatalities.
