Xarelto bleeding side effectsA New York man has filed a Xarelto blood thinner side effects lawsuit against Janssen, the makers of his drug, claiming that he suffered unnecessary health issues related to Xarelto.

Plaintiff Robert S. claims his Xarelto blood thinner side effects occurred after he began taking Xarelto. He took the blood thinning medication from June 2013 to September 2013. In August 2013, he began coughing up blood, which he attributes directly to his ingestion of Xarelto.

He claims that as a direct result of Xarelto use, he was “caused to suffer from life-threatening bleeding, as well as other severe and personal injuries which are permanent and lasting in nature, physical pain and mental anguish, including diminished enjoyment of life, expenses for hospitalization and medical treatment, and loss of earnings, among other damages.”

Robert also believes that the drug makers concealed their knowledge that Xarelto was associated with or could cause possibly fatal bleeding events and that they had failed to completely study or test the possibility of these events.

In his Xarelto blood thinner side effects lawsuit, Robert is bringing forth claims of strict liability, manufacturing defect, design defect, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, violation of consumer protection laws and loss of consortium.

This Blood Thinner Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-06959 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. It joins MDL No. 2592, In re: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation.

Xarelto Blood Thinner Side Effects

When Xarelto was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011, it joined a group of New Oral Anticoagulants (NOAC) designed to take the place of the older anticoagulant warfarin.

Xarelto, Pradaxa and Eliquis are all approved to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Patients who have undergone lower extremity surgeries or who have been in an accident are at risk for blood clots deep in their legs to occur which may travel to the heart or lungs. A clot lodged in the lungs is called a pulmonary embolism.

Warfarin, the drug that was most commonly prescribed before Xarelto and the other newer blood thinners came on the market, was less appealing now because patients of warfarin needed to change their diet and needed constant blood monitoring. Marketers of Xarelto claimed that their drug was superior because it didn’t need the same type of supervising.

However, after Xarelto hit the market, Xarelto patients began reporting life-threatening and sometimes fatal bleeding events. All blood thinners come with the risk of internal, uncontrollable bleeding, but warfarin had an easily administered cure for this: Vitamin K.

Xarelto, Pradaxa and Eliquis did not. If a Xarelto patient began to hemorrhage, there was very little a doctor could do to stop the bleeding. In the first year after FDA approval, there were more than one thousand adverse event reports by users of Xarelto. In that 1,000, sixty-five were fatal.
