pain-pelvic-meshA plaintiff, Mary Jo. G., has filed an Obtryx sling lawsuit against Boston Scientific over complications she says were worse than what she expected.

Mary Jo is filing the lawsuit alleging she suffered serious adverse side effects and complications resulting from being implanted with the Obtryx Transobturator Mid-Urethal Sling System. She claims she was implanted with the vaginal mesh in November 2015 at Christiana Care, in Newark, NJ.

The defendant facing the alleged accusations from the Obtryx sling lawsuit is Boston Scientific, the implant’s manufacturer. According to the Obtryx sling lawsuit, she files the following counts against the defendant, Negligence; Design Defect; Manufacturing Defect; Failure to Warn; Breach of Express Warranty; Breach of Implied Warranty; Loss of Consortium, by the husband; Discovery Rule, Tolling and Fraudulent Concealment; and Punitive Damages.

Mary Jo. G.’s claim, is filed as part of a large multidistrict litigation, or MDL, centered on allegations that the vaginal mesh caused a severe auto-immune response and other serious adverse side effects and complications.

According to these allegations, maintained within the Obtryx sling lawsuit, many patients have had to undergo vaginal mesh removal. Removal of the vaginal mesh can include its own risks, like any device removal surgery, including complications of infection, failure, and additional medical expenses.

Vaginal mesh implantation is used to treat POP, or pelvic organ prolapse, and SUI, or stress urinary incontinence. Both of these conditions are treated with the implantation of a vaginal mesh which helps weakened muscles support pelvic organs.

Reports indicate that the conditions of SUI and POP cause the organs of the pelvis to sink into the vagina. This can lead to pain and other adverse effects such as urinary problems. Patients who have developed SUI and POP also may experience pain during intercourse. Additionally, those who have developed these conditions are found to also suffer from muscle damage during childbirth, a hysterectomy, and menopause.

Some serious side effects common to women who have been implanted with a vaginal mesh include: severe pelvic pain, chronic pain, infection, bleeding, mesh erosion, mesh tearing, organ perforation, urinary problems, vaginal scarring, and pain during intercourse.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, vaginal mesh complications are not uncommon. In some patients, a vaginal mesh implant may erode through the vagina. Treatment for the condition results in undergoing vaginal mesh removal surgery and even then it requires an extensive, invasive, and complication procedure.

Reports purport that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that women consider their options for treating SUI and POP before being implanted with a vaginal mesh product.
