A Wisconsin woman has filed a Mirena IUD problems lawsuit against Bayer claiming that Mirena IUD problems caused her pseudotumor cerebri and other complications.

Plaintiff Kendra H., a thirty-three-year-old woman, alleges she had her first Mirena IUD inserted in 2013. She claims it was implanted “without complication according to the manufacturer’s instructions by her healthcare provider.”

Kendra claims that she and her doctor “relied on Defendants’ representations regarding Mirena in its package insert, Patient Information Booklet, or otherwise disseminated by Defendants in deciding to use and prescribe Mirena.”

She reportedly began experiencing Mirena IUD problems in June 2015 when she was evaluated for potential papilledema at Aurora Medical Group in Manitowoc, Wis. Kendra was then diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri via a lumbar puncture.

On June 22, 2015, allegedly because of Mirena IUD problems, Kendra was forced to have her Mirena IUD removed. Before this time, she says she had been completely unaware that there was a connection between the Mirena IUD and her condition known as pseudotumor cerebri.

Kendra claims that she “has been permanently injured and has incurred or will incur past and future medical expenses, has experienced or will experience past and future pain and suffering, has incurred or will incur lost wages, and is subject to an increased risk of future harm.”

What is Pseudotumor Cerebri?

Pseudotumor cerebri, or PTC, is a condition that can be caused by implantation of the Mirena IUD. An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a device that is implanted in the uterus of a woman to prevent pregnancy. The Mirena IUD releases a hormone called levonorgestrel. This hormone, released in small doses, can prevent pregnancy.

However, the use of levonorgestrel has been linked with an increase of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull. This can cause a neurological condition known as pseudotumor cerebri.

Pseudotumor cerebri is also called intracranial hypertension. It sometimes mimics the symptoms of a brain tumor by increasing pressure in the skull.

Cerebrospinal fluid is constantly being created and then reabsorbed back into the body. If a person with Mirena IUD problems experiences pseudotumor cerebri, her body has problems reabsorbing that cerebrospinal fluid. This can create a “false brain tumor.”

Women who experience pseudotumor cerebri while using a Mirena IUD are often plagued by migraines or frequent headaches. These headaches begin behind the eyes and may intensify with movement. Additionally, women with Mirena IUD problems may suffer from pulsatile tinnitus, a ringing in the ears that may sound like a “whooshing” sound.

Nausea, vomiting and dizziness may occur in women who are suffering from Mirena IUD problems. Pseudotumor cerebri symptoms may also include vision problems. Vision loss, blurred vision, double vision, blind spots, difficulty seeing to the side and photopsia (seeing flashes of light) may accompany Mirena IUD problems.

Pseudotumor cerebri symptoms can also include stiffness in the neck, pain in the neck, shoulder and back, problems with walking, depression and forgetfulness.

This Mirena IUD Problems Lawsuit is Case No. Case 1:18-cv-04976-UA in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
