Overview: Shingle Vaccine Reaction
A number of adverse side effects and reactions have been associated with the administration of Zostavax, the shingles vaccine. The vaccine contains a live virus but it’s been believed to be too potent for certain individuals causing these adverse complications and injuries. In fact, shingle vaccine reactions have been reported to occur within zero to six months of vaccination. Some of the reported reactions include:
- Shingles after vaccine
- Myelitis (spinal cord inflammation)
- Postherpetic neuralgia (pain after shingles blisters pass)
- Vision problems (eye infections; retinal damage; blindness)
- Hearing loss
- Autoimmune disorders (Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating, Meniere’s Disease, Polyneuropathy)
- Cardiovascular event
- Stroke
- Pneumonia
- Congestive heart failure
- Bell’s Palsy (facial paralysis)
- Vasculitis
- Serious neurological disease/disorder
The Zostavax shingles vaccine, composed of a weakened chickenpox virus, is administered to people over the age of 50 to help prevent the development of shingles. The vaccine helps by helping the immune system fight of signs for the development of shingles. However, adverse side effects have been linked to the vaccine that have included nausea, muscle pain, joint pain, fever, and headaches.
There have also been other side effects reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These have ranged from brain damage, to paralysis and death. In fact, these side effects led the FDA to issue a black box warning; the strictest of its kind. Side effects included in the FDA’s recent Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) included: rashes, myalgina, anaphylactic reactions, necrotizing retinitis, and gastrointestinal disorders.
The lawsuit filed against the makers of the Zostavax vaccine reported on a number of reports made to the FDA regarding shingle vaccine reaction and complications linked to the vaccine since its 2006 release. If you or a loved one have experienced a shingle vaccine reaction following the administration of the Zostavax shingles vaccine, you may have a legal claim.
