A Maryland widow has filed a Xarelto lawsuit on behalf of her late husband after he suffered from injuries including pulmonary embolism and died. The plaintiff, Susan B., filed the lawsuit after her late husband, Charles B., allegedly died from Xarelto side effects.
According to the Xarelto lawsuit, Charles began taking Xarelto at the direction of his doctor on Oct. 4, 2014, in order to reduce his risk of blood clots, stroke, and related risks.
However, just a little over one year after he began taking Xarelto, Charles allegedly suffered from a major pulmonary embolism complication. The lawsuit alleges that the pulmonary embolism led to Charles’ death on April 21, 2016.
The Xarelto lawsuit alleges that the pulmonary embolism and Charles’ eventual death was a direct result of taking Xarelto. According to the lawsuit, Janssen failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about serious Xarelto side effects, including pulmonary embolism, excessive bleeding, and fatality.
The Xarelto lawsuit asserts multiple claims including negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, along with wrongful death. Charles filed his Xarelto claim on Feb. 20, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Background of Xarelto
Xarelto, also sold under its generic name rivaroxaban, is a popular blood thinner medication. Blood thinners are also known as anticoagulants, and are used to prevent blood clotting and clot-related conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Xarelto is manufactured by Janssen, a prominent subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson. Xarelto is a recent addition to the blood thinner market, first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2011.
Xarelto is meant to prevent blood clots and clot-related conditions, and in general, this is a good thing. However, clotting has a specific use that, in some cases, can actually be life-saving. During bleeding emergencies, the body forms blood clots to stem the bleeding. But a person taking an anticoagulant like Xarelto is often unable to properly form these life-saving clots. This can increase a patient’s risk of permanent injury or, in some cases, even cause death.
Filing a Xarelto Lawsuit
Lawsuits filed over Xarelto claim that Janssen was aware of the serious risks associated with their anticoagulant for years. The lawsuits allege that the manufacturer failed to warn both patients and the medical community about the risks, placing company profit over patient safety.
If you or someone you love has suffered from Xarelto pulmonary embolism, internal bleeding, or another Xarelto claim, you may be able to file a Xarelto lawsuit.
While filing a Xarelto lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering from these Xarelto complications, or bring a loved one back to life, it can at least help to compensate for the financial expenses often incurred by medical bills and lost wages.
The Xarelto Pulmonary Embolism Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-01736-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
