Recent studies indicate that cerebellar atrophy may be linked with Dilantin adverse effects, with the treatment mechanism potentially causing brain atrophy.
There have been a number of serious Dilantin adverse effects reported over the years, including cerebellar atrophy and severe allergic reactions, which has landed manufacturer Pfizer Inc. in hot water with some patients.
These serious Dilantin adverse effects have been reported by numerous patients. Cerebellar atrophy is the degeneration of the cerebellum, and is a focal variant of cerebral or brain atrophy.
Brain atrophy is the shrinking and degeneration of the brain, and the loss of neurological connections between the brain and central nervous system. Overall, cerebellar atrophy affects the brain’s ability to carry out orders for voluntary movements like walking and speaking.
Due to how the condition effects the brain’s cerebellum, the symptoms of cerebellar atrophy are very similar to stroke including:
- Unsteady or Lurching Walking Gait
- Slow or Unsteady Jerky Movements in Arms or Legs
- Slow or Slurred Speech
- Nystagmus (small rapid eye movements)
- Memory Loss
Overview of Dilantin Cerebellar Atrophy Correlation
While there are a number of causes that can lead to brain atrophy, including alcohol poisoning and degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, this condition has been linked to Dilantin adverse effects in studies since the early 1990s.
The first study to analyze the correlation was conducted in 1994 and was published in the Annals of Neurology, which found that Dilantin patients had significantly smaller cerebelli compared to other patients. This study consisted of five epileptic patients who were prescribed Dilantin (phenytoin), to treat their epileptic conditions.
This study was conducted to observe the treatment mechanism of Dilantin and how it works to prevent seizures in the brain. Scientists discovered the smaller cerebelli when analyzing diagnostic images, which has spurred major concern in the medical community ever since.
A later study conducted in 2003 found similar results in patient injury reports, with researchers determining that long term Dilantin exposure increased the chances of cerebellar atrophy. Cerebellar atrophy remains a prominent concern in the patient population and medical community, with patients regularly submitting reports to website ehealthme.
According to the most recent study, approximately 19,259 patients submitted injury reports described Dilantin adverse effects. After the reports were consolidated on May 29, 2018, it was found that 13 patients had developed cerebellar atrophy.
These injury reports were collected from the FDA and other report sources. Other studies have also noted that children may also be at risk for brain atrophy from Dilantin adverse effects when prescribed the medication.
Dilantin works by slowing down the electrical signals in the brain, which prevents the onset of seizures. Dilantin has been on the market since the 1960s, and is considered one of the most reliable antiepileptic medications in the United States.
However, the serious Dilantin adverse effects reported have spurred major concern in the medical community. Patients who may have developed cerebellar atrophy from Dilantin adverse effects may be eligible to file legal action against Pfizer Inc.
