(Sept. 2, 2024)

Walmart is affected by a recall of nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in its stores across the United States as they may contain harmful levels of inorganic arsenic.

The Walmart apple juice recall applies to 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.ย

Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages US Inc. voluntarily recalled the contaminated six-packs of 8-ounce (227-gram) juice bottles after discovering levels of the chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards, according to the recall notice.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration originally published the recall Aug. 15 and then upgraded it to a more urgent classification Aug. 23. The new Class II classification says the juice may temporarily cause adverse health consequences but is unlikely to cause serious or irreversible medical issues.

Arsenic exposure can cause minor symptoms, FDA says

Slightly elevated levels of arsenic can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness and muscle cramping, according to the FDA.

Levels found in the recalled apple juice bottles are low enough that the FDA says it does not expect them to cause severe health consequences. It did not state whether there have been any adverse side effects from consumers drinking the juice.

Last year, a consumer hit Walmart with a class action lawsuit alleging it sells Great Value apple juice but fails to disclose that the juice contains chemical preservatives.ย
