Walmart issued a recall for nearly 18,000 Swagtron-branded electric scooters over concerns their lithium-ion batteries could overheart, smoke, melt and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards  that could cause serious injury or death.

The scooter recall involves around 17,970 Swagtron SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter Electric Scooters sold in black and silver with model numbers SWGR5-V2-SLV, SWGR5-V2-2, SG5 Boost, SG-5S, 96262-2, 96262-9, SG-5S and 96560-2.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using and charging the recalled electric scooters and dispose of the entire product following local and state hazardous waste disposal procedures.

Walmart said there have been seven reports of the lithium-ion batteries in the recalled electric scooters overheating, smoking, melting or igniting — with one ignition resulting in a fire that led to a burn injury and caused “substantial” property damage.

Recalled electric scooters sold at Walmart, Sam’s Club locations nationwide

The recalled electric scooters were sold at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores nationwide as well as on the companies’ respective websites from May 2018 through October 2024 for between $175 and $450.

Consumers who purchased the scooters from Sam’s Club or Walmart will receive an email with instructions on how to receive a full refund, according to the scooter recall.

Individuals with more questions about the recall can contact Walmart by phone at 800-925-6278 or through its website

DGL Group and Razor issued separate recalls for thousands of electric scooters in 2024 over concerns they had defects that could cause injuries.
