  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Volkswagen is recalling more than 89,000 Audi vehicles due to improperly tightened cylinder head cover screws that could cause oil leaks and potentially lead to engine fires.

The Audi recall, announced on May 7, affects the 2022-2024 Audi Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro models.

The issue was identified after customer complaints about oil leaks from the cylinder head covers of Q5 2.0 TFSI vehicles in May 2023.

Subsequent investigations revealed that screws with burrs were damaging the sealing surface, leading to potential oil leakage and reduced torque over time.

If leaked oil contacts hot engine components, it could increase the risk of a fire, the recall notice says.

Drivers should be on lookout for warning signs, recall states

According to the recall, authorized Audi dealers will inspect and replace the cylinder head cover screws if necessary, at no cost to the vehicle owners.

Audi plans to notify affected vehicle owners via mail starting July 8 and advises owners to be vigilant for any signs of smoke or unusual odors emanating from the engine bay, as these could be indicators of the issue.

Volkswagen is addressing the issue by offering free inspections and replacements of the faulty screws at authorized Audi dealerships. This remedy aims to prevent any potential oil leaks that could lead to engine fires.

For more information about the recall, Audi vehicle owners can visit the recall page of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to check if their vehicle is affected.

Additionally, Audi customer service can be reached at 1-800-253-2834 for further assistance.

Volkswagen says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Volkswagen and Audi recently faced a class action lawsuit alleging the companies failed to disclose or adequately repair a “dangerous” and “widespread” defect in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries equipped in certain model year 2019-2024 Audi e-tron SUV electric vehicles.
