Testosterone gel Vogelxo received final approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on June 4. While Vogelxo is not currently available in the pharmaceutical market, Vogelxo maker Upsher-Smith plans to begin marketing and selling their testosterone product in the near future.
According to the FDA released drug information, Vogelxo is an androgen topical gel (similar to AndroGel, Axiron, and Foresta) used to treat hypogonadism, a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone. Hypogonadism is fairly common in men entering into their 40s and 50s.
As the male body ages, it naturally decreases the amount of testosterone produced, which can result in low sperm count, decreased muscle mass, weight gain, and erectile dysfunction.
Many middle aged men seek some type of hormone replacement therapy in order to maintain their active lifestyle and physique. It is estimated that more than 10 million men in the United States are prescribed and use testosterone products to treat low testosterone (or low-t) levels in their bodies. As a result of the market demand, the testosterone product market generates over $2 billion in sales annually. Companies like Upsher-Smith and the makers of AndroGel, Axiron, and Fortesta stand to make huge revenues on testosterone products alone.
However, recent studies show that there are various risks associated with taking testosterone products to treat low-t conditions, which have been cited by testosterone product lawsuits. Many physicians and researchers are concerned with the growing reports of testosterone customers suffering heart attacks, strokes, and, in some cases, death after continued use of several androgen testosterone products.
As a result, many individuals are pursuing Androgel, Axiron, and Fortesta testosterone product class action lawsuits. Many plaintiffs and their legal counsel allege in their testosterone product lawsuits that manufacturers of testosterone products have overstated the problems associated with low-t conditions, especially considering that they are normal symptoms of aging men.
Testosterone Product Side Effects
As of Jan. 31, the FDA has launched an extensive investigation into all testosterone products, because of the overwhelming number of reports regarding testosterone complications.
Testosterone products and injections can cause a number of unwanted side effects. These side effects include:
- Blood Clot
- Enlarged prostrate
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Death
In cases of testosterone androgen gel and cream, there is a high risk of secondary testosterone exposure. This can result in the virilization of children and women, which may lead to other medical complications.
Testosterone Product Lawsuits
The number of unwanted and often dangerous side effects of testosterone products has led to many consumers and their families pursuing testosterone product class action lawsuits. Testosterone gels, creams, and even injections all increase an individual’s risk of blood clot, stroke, and heart failure. This is especially true for testosterone product consumers over the age of 65.
On May 2014, many testosterone product lawsuits were consolidated into a centralized testosterone drug class action lawsuit.
