Recently, the drug’s label was updated to warn prescribers and patients of the risk of serious hypersensitivity reactions.

Varubi is an anti-nausea drug used to prevent nausea and vomiting experienced by chemotherapy patients. It can be administered in pill form or as an IV injection. Typically, Varubi is used in conjunction with other anti-nausea drugs in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea.

Some chemotherapy patients who were administered or prescribed Varubi after chemotherapy reported experiencing serious hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylactic shock. Reports show that such reactions typically occur within a few minutes after the drug is administered. Symptoms of hypersensitivity Varubi side effects are reported to include:

  • swelling of the face or throat
  • difficulty breathing
  • wheezing
  • hives
  • itching
  • flushing
  • vomiting
  • abdominal cramping
  • abdominal pain
  • back pain
  • chest pain
  • hypotension
  • shock

Reportedly, numerous cases of this reaction have required the patient to be hospitalized. Allegedly, patients with existing allergies to legumes, soybean oil, and other related allergens are at particularly high risk to develop the hypersensitivity Varubi side effect.

Lawyers are investigating possible legal claims by patients who allege that they were injured by Varubi side effects. If you or a loved one suffered an anaphylactic reaction after taking or being administered Varubi as part of a chemotherapy treatment, you may have a legal claim.

In particular, lawyers are investigating if Varubi’s manufacturer, TESARO Inc., insufficiently labeled the drugs, causing physicians, other medical professionals, and patients to use the drug while being unaware of its potentially serious consequences.

The drug was first licensed in 2015 as a pill, then as an IV in October 2017. The IV version of the drug was available to consumers starting in November 2017. Shortly thereafter, TESARO and physicians started to receive patient complaints that the drug caused severe anaphylactic reactions. As a result, the label for the drug was reportedly recently updated to include a warning about anaphylactic side effects.

A quote from TESARO states that “anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock and other serious hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in the postmarketing setting, some requiring hospitalization. These reactions have occurred during or soon after the infusion of Varubi injectable emulsion. Most reactions have occurred within the first few minutes of administration.”

This statement was released on Jan. 12, 2018, when the company reported that they added warning labels about the anaphylactic Varubi side effect to the drug’s label.

Nonetheless, the drug has been on the market in some form since 2015 with no such label. Most notably, the drug was on the market for several months after consumers reported negative anaphylactic reactions to the drug. TESARO’s own estimations report that at least 7,000 doses of Varubi injections have been given to chemotherapy patients in the United States.

Participating in a Varubi side effect lawsuit can help individuals gain compensation for injuries they suffered. Through a legal claim, consumers can seek damages for financial, physical, and emotional injury.
