Over 300 patients have already come forward to accuse George Tyndall, a former gynecologist at the University of Southern California, of sexual assault, in a widely reported USC scandal.
Allegedly, Tyndall had inappropriate sexual contact with his patients. He reportedly examined over 20,000 patients during his time at USC, so many more people may have been affected than the hundreds who have already come forward.
In the USC scandal, many patients claim that the university turned a blind eye to his crimes for many years, allowing him to continue practicing. George Tyndall lawsuits allege that medical staff in Tyndall’s clinic reported complaints about his conduct to the university, as did patients, but the university failed to take action.
This month, 30 more women have filed a lawsuit against USC saying that the university did not sufficiently protect them from abuse, and saying that they should not have allowed Tyndall to practice. This latest lawsuit brings the total number of women who have formally accused Tyndall to over 340.
According to many victims, the university did not take sufficient action to protect patients and some staff members were complicit in Tyndall’s inappropriate actions. One lawsuit claims that “USC nurses, chaperones and other staff members were regularly present in examination rooms, observed the inappropriate sexual molestation, and took no steps to stop it as it occurred.”
The university is currently under the guidance of Interim President Wanda Austin, who stated that the school’s leadership is “fully committed to bringing about change that will renew us — in both purpose and action,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
However, this commitment to action and change may have come too late to many of Tyndall’s former patients. Allegedly, the university’s health center director actively concealed records about his misconduct.
In a statement made on May 18, the university admitted that eight reports of abuse had been filed between 2000 and 2014, during Tyndall’s employment at the university. He was reportedly placed on leave in 2016 after an investigation determined that he had been making “racially discriminatory and sexually inappropriate remarks to patients.”
Though the university began termination proceedings at this point, Tyndall reportedly threatened the university with legal action, so the university and the former gynecologist reached a settlement in 2017. However, USC continues to claim that though they had received eight reports of abuse, they had found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing on Tyndall’s part.
The university also claims that they did not cover up any information, as many patients are claiming in the numerous lawsuits filed as part of the USC scandal.
