During the COVID-19 pandemic, many corporations saw record-setting profits. In some instances, these substantial profit hikes came at the consumer’s expense. The USAA class action lawsuit is seeking to return some of those profits to the consumers.
One industry that experienced excessive profits during this time was the auto insurance industry. With California’s stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, the vast majority of drivers were not driving. Many individuals were not using their automobiles for weeks or months at a time. On the consumer level, California saw a dramatic reduction in driving and driving-related accidents.
This means that auto insurance companies, such as USAA, saw a dramatic decrease in claims that it was required to cover. However, policyholders had to pay the same premiums, regardless of how little they were driving. As part of the USAA class action lawsuit, we are seeking to even out that unfair profit margin, and you may be eligible for a refund.
For those who have since moved out of California, you are still eligible to take part in the USAA class action lawsuit. As long as you lived in the state from March 1, 2020 through June 11, 2021 and had a USAA policy for your vehicle before 2019, you can take part in this lawsuit.

Is USAA giving money back to customers?
In April 2020, USAA announced that it would be offering refunds and lower premiums to policyholders who were impacted by the pandemic. In the words of USAA’s President and CEO Wayne Peacock, “Giving money back to our members, especially now when budgets are stretched, is another way we are helping. We see that members are driving less than when the pandemic hit. As these patterns unfold, we are adjusting our auto insurance rates.” As part of this decision, USAA returned $270 million to policyholders in the form of statement credits.
However, this class action lawsuit alleges that these USAA COVID-19 refunds were not enough. According to the filing, USAA was still charging excessive premiums during this time, creating an unfair financial windfall.
What if my USAA policy is with a USAA subsidiary?
When it comes to auto insurance, USAA has 4 separate subsidiaries that write policies. This class action lawsuit has been filed against two branches: United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and USAA Casualty Insurance Group (USAA CIG). If you’re a policyholder with one of these two entities or you are unsure about which entity covers you, we want to hear from you. You may be eligible for additional compensation due to an insufficient USAA COVID-19 refund.
