Tesla recall overview:

  • Who: Tesla is recalling more than 37,000 of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
  • Why: A circuit board can malfunction in the vehicles, making it difficult to steer.
  • Where: The Tesla power steering recall is active in the United States.

Tesla is recalling more than 37,000 of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to a faulty circuit board that can make it harder for drivers to steer.

The Tesla recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Feb. 14. It applies to 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles operating software prior to 2023.38.4. The recall involves 376,241 vehicles.

According to the notice, the printed circuit board for the electronic power steering assist in the recall vehicles may experience an “overstress condition,” causing a loss of power steering assist when the vehicle reaches a stop and then accelerates again.

“A loss of power steering assist can require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall says.

Tesla offers free software update, recall says

To fix the issue, Tesla released a free, over-the-air software update, the recall states. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 25, 2025.

As of Jan. 10, 2025, Tesla has identified 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports for U.S. vehicles that are related to, or may be related to, the condition.

Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the condition, it says. The company is not currently facing legal action due to this recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced it is investigating Tesla vehicles over features that allow users to remotely move their car using a phone app after reports of collisions with posts and parked cars.

  1. Michelle Stein says:

Two weeks ago my 3 year old son and I were involved in a car accident that totaled our car. I was sitting at a stop sign waiting to turn left when a Model 3 Tesla crashed into me. The driver stated that her steering wheel was stuck and she couldn’t turn to avoid hitting me. I believe this absolutely relates to Tesla’s recall.
