Global technology company TeamViewer attributes a recent data breach to Midnight Blizzard, a Russian-state sponsored hacking group.
TeamViewer says Midnight Blizzard leveraged a compromised employee account to copy employee directory data, including names, corporate contact info and encrypted employee passwords.
The Midnight Blizzard hacking group also goes by APT29, Cozy Bear and Nobelium, BleepingComputer reports.
In an update published June 30, TeamViewer reconfirmed the data breach was contained to its internal corporate IT environment and did not affect its separated product environment, TeamViewer connectivity platform or any customer data.
“Given our strong commitment to security, we take the threat very seriously. We will continue our thorough investigation over the next days to enrich the collected evidence further and exhaust all investigative options,” the company says in a prior update published June 28.
News of TeamViewer data breach first revealed in Mastodon post
TeamViewer says it has more than 640,000 current users around the world and its software has been installed on more than 2.5 billion devices, BleepingComputer reports.
News of the data breach was reportedly first brought to light via a post on the social media platform Mastodon June 27, when an IT security professional disclosed NCC Group Global Threat Intelligence was aware of the incident.
The post included portions of an alert shared on the Dutch Digital Trust Center web portal, which is used by the government, security experts and Dutch corporations to exchange information regarding cybersecurity threats, according to BleepingComputer.
An alert also reportedly appeared on Health-ISAC, a community frequented by individuals in the health care industry to share threat intelligence.
In other data breach news, a pair of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster last month over claims the companies failed to properly safeguard and secure the personally identifiable information of their customers during a May data breach.
