Plaintiffs who alleged that a haircare product manufactured by Unilever resulted in scalp damage have achieved a victory and the Suave Keratin Infusion class action lawsuit settlement is now open for people affected by the treatment.
The complainants alleged that the Suave Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit contained the chemical formaldehyde, a chemical that can be corrosive and can lead to chemical burns. They added that because they were not warned of the risks, they bought the product believing it was a safe and effective method for smoothing one’s hair. Further, due to the number of complaints and reports that were coming in regarding the hair smoothing kit, the plaintiffs also argued that the company should have issued a recall, especially considering the known problems regarding formaldehyde.
After more than a year, Unilever has not admitted wrongdoing but will offer up to $10 million to class members as part of the agreement. There are four potential award categories and the settlement regarding the Suave Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit largely depends both on documentation as well as the extent of the injuries sustained. The potential awards are divided as follows for consumers:
- A one-time reimbursement of $10 for those who bought the product and sustained no injuries;
- Class members without documentation for the treatment they needed for injuries sustained due to the hair smoothing kit can receive $40;
- Class members with receipts for their medical treatment may be able to receive up to $800; and
- Class members who required a significant amount of medical care may be eligible for up to $25,000 in settlement funds pursuant to the decision of the special master.

Add me I’ve h!d hair loss
I had used this product and my head became very itchy, irritated and I use to have thick full hair and now it’s thinning and I have had to buy regrow hair treatment and still my hair is not the same. I would love to be included into this lawsuit. I do not have proof of purchase but why didn’t they tell anyone?
It happened to me
Please add me
I purchased the Suave Keratin treatment and I just got a rash all over my head small and large size rash that was a really bad breakout. I had not used anything but it and it was about a four week itchy sore scalp not really what I would call a burn but the rash did booster up and was really uncomfortable and itchy. After stopping using the product my scalp cleared up and finally cleared up but I do have thinning places in my hair. It was like it caused my hair to fall out. I was in a lot of aggravating sore places to have to deal with . Formaldahyde WOW who would have ever thought!!!!!
Omg the same exact thing happened to me. I had really thick hair. Now it’s so thin you can see my entire scalp. I used the strawberry scented shampoo and conditioner for a long time before it occurred to me that was the reason for the itching and redness. I started wearing hats all the time because everyone could see my scalp was red. I don’t use it anymore so redness and itching are gone, but the hair loss is permanent and it has been devastating for me. I want my hair back! It’s so unfair!
This is from 2014, this suit is closed.
I always use sauve conditioner and leave in conditioner. The itching on my scalp is has been insane. I didn’t even know what it was from until I read this but will stop use immediately.
It’s only the keratin.
