A South Carolina man recently filed a Benicar lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo, alleging that the drug led to a number of Benicar side effects, including severe diarrhea.
According to his Benicar lawsuit, plaintiff Dexter B., began using Benicar at the direction and prescription of his physician in 2011.
Shortly after he began taking Benicar, Dexter alleges that he experienced a number of serious Benicar side effects.
These Benicar side effects mentioned in the lawsuit include, but are not limited to:
- Nausea
- Severe diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain/discomfort
- Malabsorption
- Fatigue
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Inflammation
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Colitis
- Intestinal injury and damage
Dexter’s Benicar lawsuit claimed that he experienced these numerous Benicar side effects as a direct result of taking Benicar and filed the complaint on multiple counts, including defective design, negligence, and fraud.
Dexter’s Benicar lawsuit as well as others have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation, or MDL.
In general, this Benicar lawsuit and others like it allege that Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the risks associated with their drug, leading plaintiffs to take the drug and experience sometimes severe Benicar side effects.
This Benicar lawsuit not only claims that the use of Benicar led directly to severe side effects, but also that these complications caused the plaintiff to suffer from various unexpected medical expenses and economic injuries.
Benicar Background
Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) is manufactured by Daiichi Sankyo, Inc., and is popularly used for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. Benicar was approved by the FDA in 2002.
Olmesartan medoxomil is marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Tribenzor, and Azor.
After their release onto the market, olmesartan medoxomil drugs like Benicar became extremely popular in a very short amount of time. In 2012 alone, nearly 2 million patients filled prescriptions for olmesartan drugs in U.S. pharmacies.
Benicar and the FDA
Unfortunately, since its release onto the market, Benicar has been associated with a series of severe Benicar side effects in reports and studies.
While the FDA did initially approve Benicar in 2002, they followed up in on July 3, 2013, warning in a Drug Safety Communication letter that Benicar can cause several medical complications, including chronic diarrhea, weight gain, and gastrointestinal problems.
After this warning, the FDA approved a label change to Benicar drugs that would warn about these side effects.
Filing a Benicar Lawsuit
This Benicar lawsuit and others like it claim that Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. has continued to market their Benicar products as they did before the FDA’s warning.
Lawsuits allege that the company has actively misled consumers and the medical community about the safety and efficacy of Benicar and other olmesartan drugs.
If you or someone you know has experienced Benicar side effects after taking an olmesartan drug, you may be able to file a Benicar lawsuit.
The Benicar Lawsuit is Case No. 1:2016-cv-02520, in the U.S. District Court for the Camden Vicinage of the District of New Jersey.
