If you filed a claim for the Sony class action settlement, keep an eye on your mailbox because checks are on their way!
The Sony data breach class action settlement resolves allegations that the company failed to adequately safeguard personal information regarding their employees and further didn’t notify workers of the cyberattack immediately.
According to the terms of the Sony settlement, those who were affected by the data breach had the opportunity to file for two separate claims.
Those who filed for the “preventive measures” claim are Class Members who spent time and money between Nov. 24, 2014 and Oct. 19, 2015 trying to take measures to avoid identity theft due to the cyberattack.
“Preventive measure” Class Members had to submit valid documentation to benefit from the settlement, which capped at $1,000 per claim and was reduced depending on the number of claims filed.
Sony settlement Class Members could also file for the “Identity Theft/Misuse” claim if they suffered from actual financial loss due to the data breach. Those individuals are still able to claim up to $10,000 as the Claim Form deadline will not pass until Dec. 31, 2017.
The deadline to file a “preventive measures” claim passed on Apr. 23, 2016.
Sony continues to deny any of the allegations but agreed to settle the class action to avoid the risk and uncertainty of going to trial.
