- Why: The nasal wash may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus.
- Where: The SinuCleanse recall is active in the United States.
New York healthcare company Ascent Consumer Products is recalling one lot of its SinuCleanse nasal wash product nationwide, as it may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus (staph).
The recall was published to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website on Feb. 25. It applies to one lot of SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System with an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2027.
Ascent Consumer Products said tests confirmed this lot of the product was contaminated with staph.
“Use of the SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System, contaminated with S. aureus, can result in blood infections in users whose nasal mucosa may be compromised due to inflammation and mechanical injuries, caused by nasal irrigation,” the recall notice says.
Staph is a bacterium commonly found on the skin and in the nose of about 30% of people, according to the CDC. Most of the time staph does not cause any harm, but it can sometimes cause infections which can be fatal in the most extreme cases. Staph infections can look like pimples, boils or other skin conditions.
No customers have reported adverse effects of the recalled product to Ascent Consumer Products so far. The company is not currently facing legal action, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they can sometimes result in lawsuits.
Stop using product immediately, recall says
The affected lot of SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System was distributed nationwide at retail and online outlets in the United States through January.
Ascent Consumer Products is notifying its distributors and customers via email.
“Consumers who have this product should discontinue use immediately and return it to the place of purchase or discard it,” the recall notice says.
Earlier this month, NeilMed recalled more than 89,000 units of NasoGel for Dry Noses over “concerns of a microbial failure”.
