The side effects of Avastin eye injection can induce potentially permanent eyesight damage to patients, according to injury reports. Patients who allegedly developed side effects of Avastin eye injection had reportedly developed floaters, or tiny bubbles forming in their eyes, and began experiencing vision difficulties.
The reported side effects of Avastin eye injection are purportedly being caused by the lubricant on the syringe, which may shed into the patient’s eye when the drug is delivered through the injection.
The syringes used for Avastin injections are lubricated with silicone oil. These syringes are prepared by compound pharmacists. When the silicone oil gets into the patient’s eyes, however, silicone floaters may develop and cause the reported side effects of Avastin eye injection.
Side effects of Avastin eye injections may include:
- Increased Intraocular Pressure
- Inflammation
- Infection
- Retinal Tearing
- Retinal Detachment
- Cataract Formation
- Glaucoma (Increased Pressure in Eye)
- Hypotony (Decreased Pressure in Eye)
- Cornea Damage
- Vision Loss or Blindness
- Light Sensitivity
- Eye Pain
- Blurred Vision
Floaters are a common complaint of the side effects of Avastin eye injection, which can be traced back to adverse reactions from the needle’s silicone lubricant. It has been alleged that the preparation process for the Avastin injections may be causing these problems, with compound pharmacists not properly preparing the syringes or freezing them for later use.
It is important to note that the longer these needles are unused, the more likely it is for patients to experience Avastin eye floaters. A recent study published by JAMA Ophthalmology described researchers observing 60 patients that had received Avastin eye injections. According to the study, researchers noted 41 patients experienced Avastin eye floaters.
Overview of Side Effects of Avastin Eye Injection
Avastin is a popular cancer treatment drug that has been found to be an effective treatment method for certain eyesight diseases. These diseases include retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Avastin works by stopping the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the back of the eye, which should prevent further eyesight damage.
It is important to note that these eyesight treatment purposes are considered off label, as they have not been approved by the FDA. This means that the Avastin injections were not originally meant for eyesight treatments, which is why the syringes are prepared by compound pharmacies to prepare them for eye injections.
When compound pharmacies prepare the syringes, they are sent to ophthalmologists to treat their patients. Silicone oil may migrate from the surface of the needle and plunger and mix in with the Avastin medication.
The longer the syringe remains unused, the more likely it is the silicone oil mixes in with the drug. If this happens, the silicone oil could end up in the patients eyes and cause the reported side effects of Avastin eye injection.
In addition, the Avastin eye injections can be potentially contaminated by bacteria and can lead to the possibility of eye infections. This complication reportedly occurred in Florida and Tennessee in 2011, with one patient dying from the infection after it reportedly spread to his brain.
