Shredded cheese recall overview:
- Who: Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. is recalling more than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese.
- Why: The recall is due to potential contamination with metal fragments.
- Where: The recall is effective across the United States and Puerto Rico.
Great Lakes Cheese has initiated a cheese recall of more than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese due to concerns over metal fragment contamination. The recall, which began on Oct.3, affects products distributed across numerous states in the United States and Puerto Rico.
The recall involves several varieties of shredded cheese, including low-moisture part-skim mozzarella and various store brand cheese blends, sold under multiple brand names, such as Always Save, Borden and Happy Farms by Aldi.
These products were available at major retailers like Walmart, Target and Aldi. The recall was classified as Class II by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Dec. 1, indicating that the consumption of these products could lead to temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
“Potential metal fragments from supplier raw material” is cited as the reason for the store brand cheese recall in the notice. The affected products have specific batch and sell-by dates, and consumers are advised to check these details to identify the recalled items.
Consumers urged to discard or return affected cheese
The recall notice advises consumers to immediately discontinue the use of the affected cheese products. “Consumers who have this product should discontinue use immediately and return it to the place of purchase or discard it,” the recall notice states.
Great Lakes Cheese is actively working to address the issue by removing the affected products from store shelves and offering refunds to consumers who return the recalled items.
The company has not issued a press release for the store brand cheese recall but has notified the public through various channels, including email and telephone.
For more information about the cheese recall, consumers can visit the FDA website, where a full list of the affected products, including their sizes, UPCs and best-by dates, is available.
Great Lakes Cheese says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the cheese recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Another incident of metal fragment contamination affected more than 2.2 million pounds of Golden Island Korean barbecue pork jerky recalled in late October and distributed nationwide to Costco and Sam’s Club locations.
