Atrium Medical Corporation is facing a new hernia mesh lawsuit from a Pennsylvania couple alleging the company’s hernia mesh product caused the husband serious damage. The couple alleges serious complications with hernia mesh, including infection and the mesh eroding into the man’s bowel.
Plaintiffs Leonard B. and Marlene B. are filing legal action together, as Leonard reportedly suffered major complications with hernia mesh. Leonard had been initially implanted with the C-Qur mesh on June 1, 2011, when he was admitted to hospital care for hernia repair.
While initially responding well to the product, Leonard began experiencing complications from hernia mesh including severe abdominal pain. Physicians discovered serious hernia mesh infection and erosion, which caused Leonard to undergo emergency surgery to remove it.
Along with the hernia mesh, Leonard had to have a significant portion of his bowel removed due to the complications with hernia mesh. After the C-Qur hernia mesh was removed, Leonard underwent an extensive recovery program that included aggressive antibiotic treatment.
However, Leonard sustained permanent injuries allegedly due to the complications with hernia mesh, and has had his life permanently altered. Along with extensive medical damages, Marlene is filing for loss of consortium, alleging her marriage has been permanently impacted by the hernia mesh product.
At all times relevant, the C-Qur had been implanted to fix Leonard’s hernia and had never been used outside of its intended purpose.
Leonard claims he and his wife had no previous knowledge of the alleged defective nature of the hernia mesh product. They claim that he never would have agreed to having the device stay in his body.
Overview of Complications with Hernia Mesh
Even though physicians have been using hernia mesh products for over 50 years, it has been recently alleged that some models were defectively made. There have been so many concerns of hernia mesh complications that Johnson & Johnson recently withdrew their Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh from the market in May 2016.
Reports of complications with hernia mesh have included serious infections, mesh erosion and organ damage that required additional surgeries to treat the injuries. Complications with hernia mesh that have been reported include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Infection
- Erosion
- Mesh migration
- Bacterial infections
- Hernia mesh complications recurrence
The need for additional procedures is not uncommon, as these injuries of require revision surgery to fix the damage. Even though these hernia mesh complications could be devastating to patients, Atrium Medical Corporation and other companies allegedly failed to warn the consumers.
