A Jeep Wrangler recall has been issued over a defective and dangerous airbag system, linked with serious injuries and even fatalities.
Vehicles from a number of manufacturers over the course of several years were installed with Takata airbags. Unfortunately, these airbags have recently been found to be defective, placing car owners at risk. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles have been impacted by the Takata airbag recall
Jeep Wrangler Recall Basics
The 2010-2016 Wrangler vehicles are affected in this Jeep Wrangler recall.
According to the Jeep Wrangler recall, the front airbags in certain Jeep models were found to be dangerously defective. Jeep and other automakers have ended up recalling hundreds of thousands of vehicles that use Takata-made ammonium nitrate airbags. The propellant in these airbags can reportedly degrade over time, causing them to explode.
An unexpected exploding airbag is obviously dangerous in and of itself, posing a threat to driver and passenger. But the Takata airbag system can also blast metal shrapnel throughout the car, substantially increasing the risk of injury or even death.
The problem has been linked with the Takata airbag’s inflator system, which consists of a metal cartridge loaded with propellant. The propellant is key to the airbag’s function, as they are devices designed to inflate very quickly in order to perform as needed.
However, the defective airbags can actually inflate with more force than they should, causing them to explode with such force that the metal cartridge inside ruptures. This can blast metal shrapnel into the vehicle, endangering the driver and passengers alike. Airbags should be a life-saving device, but this defect can turn them into something that is essentially a weapon.
Experts involved in the Jeep Wrangler recall note that the Takata airbags don’t have enough of the drying agent that prevents the propellant from degrading with exposure to humidity, causing explosions rather than saving lives.
Takata Airbag Recall
The Jeep Wrangler is not the only vehicle included in the recall. Models from Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, and Mercedes have also been affected.
A growing number of consumers who own vehicles involved in the recall have filed lawsuits against their car’s manufacturer and Takata itself, the airbag manufacturer. Takata has been hit with so many lawsuits and fines that it recently filed for bankruptcy.
Automakers may have been aware of the dangerous defects linked with these Takata airbags for a significant period of time. However, many customers claim that their vehicle’s manufacturer failed to warn them about the serious risks associated with the airbag system, or failed to take action soon enough.
