Filing a Lawsuit Because of IED Injuries in AfghanistanMany U.S. military personnel have suffered IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq over the past couple of decades. Some U.S. military have even been killed by IEDs during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those who have suffered from IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq or their families may be able to seek legal compensation for their injuries.

What is an IED?

An IED, or improvised explosive device, is essentially a remotely-detonated bomb. They have been used in both Iraq and Afghanistan, often as roadside bombs.

It is a device that is contrived and implemented in ways that are not considered conventional military action. They are often used by terrorists to disrupt or incapacitate personnel or vehicles.

Many U.S. troops died from or were wounded with IED injuries in Afghanistan and Iraq. These weapons accounted for almost two-thirds of the coalition deaths (63%) from the beginning of the Iraq War until 2007. Additionally, IED injuries in Afghanistan contributed to 66% of coalition deaths since 2001.

EFPs (explosively formed penetrators) used in Iraq and Afghanistan were also very deadly and cost many lives. An explosively formed penetrator is an deadly device that, when detonated, can pierce the armor of anyone within range. Sometimes these EFPs are disguised like garbage or rocks along the side of the road.

Additionally, improvised rocket assisted munitions or RAMs have wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. In essence, a RAM is a rocket-assisted bomb. They can be propane tanks filled with explosive contents and may be shot from the back of a truck using a remote control device.

It has been discovered by the Department of Defense that many of these IEDs responsible for IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq were supplied by Iran. While this may not seem like an important detail, it is possible to hold certain entities accountable for IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Because IEDs, EFPs and RAMs have been found to originate from Iran, claimants can hold Iran or the banks that funded them accountable.

Who is Responsible for IED Injuries in Afghanistan?

Both IEDs and EFPs in Afghanistan and Iraq have been found to be supplied in part from Iran. Western banks such as HSBC of UK, BNP Paribas of France, and Germany’s Commerzbank have all been implicated in funding Iran. Federal law allows for U.S. citizens, if they suffered IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq, to hold both Iran and the funding banks responsible.

Allegedly, with the aid of these banks, Iran supplied terrorist organizations with these bombs, causing deaths and IED injuries in Afghanistan and Iraq.

A top ranking official in the U.S. government in 2011, Adm. Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time, determined that Shiite terrorists were receiving help from the Iranian government. He said, “Iran is very directly supporting extremist Shia groups, which are killing our troops. They are shipping high-tech weapons in there—RAMS, EFPs—which are killing our people and the forensics prove that.”

If you or a family member suffered IED injuries in Afghanistan or Iraq or died as a result, you may be able to reap financial compensation by way of legal action. While financial compensation cannot bring a loved one back to life or take away pain and suffering, it can help offset the financial burden of medical costs and lost wages.
