Red recall sign regarding the seafood products recalled after making consumers sickSeveral seafood products have been recalled by The Canadian Food Inspection Agency because they may make consumers sick. In both cases, there have already been reported illnesses.

On Feb. 22, the agency issued a food recall warning regarding certain Sawmill Bay Shellfish brand Pacific Aquacultured Oysters due to norovirus. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the seafood recall after conducting an investigation into an outbreak of a foodborne illness.

Norovirus can cause symptoms of gastroenteritis within 12 to 48 hours of exposure. Norovirus symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, chills and/or fatigue.

People experiencing diarrhea and/or vomiting should drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Norovirus symptoms generally subside within a day or two and do not typically cause long-term health effects.

The affected oysters were reportedly sold to hotels, restaurants and institutions, as well as at a seafood market in Kelowna. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is verifying that the recalled oysters are being removed from the marketplace.

On Feb. 25, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a food recall warning for certain Unomundo brand tuna products due to elevated levels of histamine. Consumers should not eat the affected products and companies that purchased the recalled tuna products should not sell or use them.

Histamines cannot be destroyed by cooking. High levels of histamine in fish can cause scombroid poisoning, a type of reaction that can cause diarrhea, dizziness, burning throat, headache, facial swelling, vomiting, and/or a peppery taste in the mouth.

The affected products include Unomundo tuna loin and Unomundo brand tuna steak both from lot # 59831. The lot code only appears on the master case and the product may have been served without a label or coding. In that case consumers should contact their retailer if they think they may have purchased recalled tuna.

The Unomundo tuna recall was issued after consumer complaints and reports of reactions associated with consumption of the tuna products.

Food products that are contaminated with high levels of histamine may not look or smell spoiled. However, they can still cause sickness if consumed.

The Canada Food Inspection Agency is verifying that the recalled Unomundo tuna products are removed from the marketplace.

Consumers who become sick from consuming a recalled product should contact a doctor.

A Class 2 recall is issued for moderate risk situations in which consuming the recalled product will likely lead to short-term health problems that are not life-threatening.

If you have a food safety or labeling concern, you can report it to the Canada Food Inspection Agency.
