anti-aging productsAppearance has always been an important part of American culture, but with recent pressure to avoid the appearance of aging, the measures customers are taking are becoming steadily more extreme. Cosmetic companies are cashing in on this obsession. Two businessmen have taken it a step further by creating a school for it.

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes, teaches, and even certifies people to become specialists in anti-aging supplements. The school was founded in 1993 by Dr. Robert Goldman and Dr. Ronald Klatz, both osteopathic physicians.

As of 2011, the academy has certified approximately 26,000 practitioners from 110 countries. Additionally, the academy’s activities include lobbying, public presentations, educational displays and public media relations. Because the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not recognize anti-aging creams or supplements to be traditional medicine, this academy or its practitioners are not regulated.

As of now, skin care product companies are advertising many of their products to be miracle discoveries that can halt or even reverse the signs of aging. Oftentimes these products are face creams that are often very expensive and sold in small amounts. These companies often boast that their products contain exotic ingredients or are backed by scientific studies. Both of these statements have been targeted in multiple anti-aging product class action lawsuits alleging deceptive marketing practices.

A4M takes this idea a step further by educating people to create their own products, and to spread the word to others. While most experts agree with methods such as diet and exercise, some of their other treatments, such as the use of human growth hormones (HGH), raises concern in the medical community. Many scientists studying the process of human aging often disassociate themselves with the academy or completely denounce the organization. Additionally, critics have accused the group of using misleading marketing tactics to sell expensive and ineffective products.

The academy argues that they are actually agreeing with traditional medical sciences, stating that the basis of their methods comes from mainstream scientific consensus, and that their ideas are simply challenging current medical practices. Goldman, Klatz and several merchants who promote A4M’s products have been involved in several legal disputes regarding this issue throughout the years.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Companies Under Scrutiny

Regardless of controversial activities, the academy follows the same formula as most other anti-aging cosmetic product companies, some of which have been accused of using deceptive marketing claims that exaggerate the benefits of each product, and which allegedly have no scientific basis for such claims. Some of the anti-aging products currently being investigated for alleged deceptive marketing include:

  • Garnier “Nutritioniste” Ultra-Lift Products
  • Eclos Face Serum
  • DermaSilk
  • 3 LAB Super “h” Serum
  • Sunday Riley Bionic
  • Revlon Age Defying with DNA Advantage
  • L’Oreal Paris “Revitalift” Products
  • Youtheory Collagen Tablets
  • Jane Carter Solution

Anti-aging cream companies have been garnering more and more criticism from the public, due to unsatisfied customers complaining of ineffective products. Millions of Americans are suing these companies for this reason, arguing that the companies failed to live up to the obligation to present accurate information.
