Ritz crackers recall overview:
- Who: Mondelez Global LLC is recalling certain packages of Ritz sandwich crackers.
- Why: The crackers were mislabeled, which could potentially lead to life-threatening allergic reactions for consumers with peanut allergies.
- Where: The recall is effective nationwide in the United States.
Mondelez has issued a nationwide recall for specific packages of Ritz sandwich crackers due to a labeling error that could pose a severe health risk to consumers with peanut allergies.
The recall affects products labeled as containing cheese, which may actually contain peanut butter, leading to potentially life-threatening allergic reactions. It involves 8-pack, 20-pack and 40-pack Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich cartons as well as 20-pack Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack cartons.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue arose from a supplier error where film packaging rolls used for peanut butter products were incorrectly labeled as cheese.
“Corrective actions are being taken to help ensure this issue does not recur,” the announcement says.
“Those with an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts who consume the product risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions,” the recall notice says.
The affected products include specific universal product codes (UPCs) and best-by dates, which can be found on the FDA’s website.
Labeling error poses risk for peanut allergies, recall says
The recall notice highlights the risk for individuals with peanut allergies, urging them not to consume the mislabeled products. The FDA has provided a detailed list of affected items, including their UPC codes and best-by dates, to help consumers identify the recalled products.
“Consumers who have this product should discontinue use immediately and return it to the place of purchase or discard it,” the recall notice says.
Mondelez is actively working to rectify the situation and prevent future occurrences. The company has assured consumers that no other Ritz products are affected by this recall. The FDA’s announcement also noted that no reports of injury or illness have been linked to the recalled products so far.

Mondelez says it has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In 2024, Mondelez faced a class action lawsuit alleging it misrepresented its Ritz Bits Cracker Sandwiches as being made with real cheese, even though the primary filling ingredient is not cheese.
