Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems have become prevalent a problem for patients who have to weigh the risks of stroke and potentially fatal internal bleeding.
Pradaxa (dabigatran) was the first anticoagulant to be approved to go to market since warfarin in the 1960s, and has since become a popular choice for patients across the country.
Pradaxa and other anticoagulants work by inhibiting the body’s clotting mechanism, which prevents blood clots and increases circulation efficiency.
Consequently, this prevents the body from recovering from minor internal bleeding injuries that can quickly turn fatal. Research has suggested patients may be especially at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding with Pradaxa.
Studies have found:
- 16.6% of Pradaxa patients may experience some form of internal bleeding
- 3.3% of Pradaxa patients may experience serious bleeding
- 1.5% of Pradaxa patients may experience life-threatening internal bleeding
- 0.3% of Pradaxa patients may experience brain hemorrhage or stroke
It is important to note that gastrointestinal bleeding may be more likely if patients are taking other medications, which may include Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems.
Patients who experience Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems should seek emergency help immediately, with early intervention being the most ideal. Symptoms of Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems include:
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Pink or brown urine
- Red or black runny stool
- Coughing up blood
- Headaches, dizziness or lethargy
- Bleeding from gums or frequent nose bleeds
- Weakness and swelling in the arms, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
Even though these are potentially dangerous complications, Boehringer Ingelheim allegedly failed to warn patients against these possibilities.
Overview of Pradaxa Uncontrollable Bleeding Problems
Even though Pradaxa’s entrance into the market was considered momentous, the manufacturing company’s celebration was short lived as patients reported a serious flaw in their medication. Boehringer Ingelheim has received numerous reports of Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems since its release in 2010.
The German pharmaceutical company marketed the drug to be more efficient and convenient than warfarin, but failed to disclose the fact that Pradaxa lacked a bleeding antidote.
The marketing appeal of Pradaxa was the fact that it could be prescribed in a single dose, while warfarin required patients to frequently see their doctors for dose adjustments.
However warfarin has a readily available reversal agent in the case of internal bleeding, while Pradaxa did not for years.
Even though the Pradaxa reversal agent Praxbind (idarucizumab) was recently released for emergency use, it does not help the numerous patients who have already suffered from Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems.
Patients who have experienced possible Pradaxa uncontrollable bleeding problems may be able to file legal action against the pharmaceutical company.
In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
