Risperdal, a drug used to treat several physiological and neurological problems is the target of numerous Rispderal lawsuits alleging the drug can cause gynecomastia, or “man boobs.”
Risperdal began its clinical life as an atypical antipsychotic, a second-generation drug designed to treat schizophrenia. But many drugs designed to treat diseases of the brain find other uses. For example, seizure medicines may be found to work as antidepressants. Along similar lines, researchers discovered that Risperdal could help treat bipolar disorder and some symptoms associated with autism.
In many forms of autism, aggression and irritability are present. Risperdal was eventually approved to treat this aggression and irritability. Studies have suggested that the drug can help calm people with autism without leaving them drugged like a sedative would. However, concerns of serious Risperdal side effects have been raised.
Studies have suggested that Risperdal side effects could include male breast growth. Researchers have suggested Risperdal can increase a person’s level of prolactin, a hormone that regulates breast growth in females.
However, excessive prolactin levels in males can lead to male breast growth, or gynecomastia. This side effect is most pronounced in younger males who took Risperdal during their childhood and teens, but new studies are suggesting the effect could be seen throughout life.
Concerns of Risperdal side effects have put the drug at the center of Risperdal lawsuits. These Risperdal lawsuits have taken the form of a Risperdal MDL, a sort of coordinated group of similar lawsuits. MDLs are similar, in some ways, to class action lawsuits.
Both class action lawsuits and MDLs are designed to help streamline the legal process by combining tens, hundreds, or even thousands, of potential individual lawsuits into a single coordinated legal process. The main difference is that class action lawsuits are started as group lawsuits, while MDLs start out as a number of similar individual cases.
The Risperdal MDL is In re: Risperdal Litigation, Case No. 100300296, in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.
