Rexulti is a newer psychiatric drug, similar to Abilify, which is prescribed to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia and depression. However, some critics suspect Rexulti is also similar to Abilify when it comes to Rexulti side effects.
Rexulti, generically known as brexpiprazole, is an atypical antipsychotic that is used for some to treat schizophrenia. In some people, when regular antidepressants do not work, Rexulti can be prescribed to augment their other medications.
Rexulti is very new to the pharmaceutical market. It was approved in 2015 as a successor to Abilify and is considered a more potent drug than Abilify.
Both Abilify and Rexulti are dopamine D2 receptor partial agonists. They are also activators of serotonin 5HT1A receptors and block 5HT2A receptors. This rebalances the serotonin and dopamine in the brain. It is known that dopamine controls the pleasure seeking parts of the brain, which may be why drugs like Abilify and possibly Rexulti can be seen to affect pleasure-seeking behaviors in patients.
Altering the affects of dopamine may signal the brain to continue seeking a particular pleasurable action. In the cases of Abilify side effects including the compulsions to seek our sex, gambling or food, this may be as a result of the drug’s affect on dopamine.
Rexulti is similar to Abilify, also used to treat depression and schizophrenia. Abilify has been connected with behaviors related to compulsion and addiction. Some Abilify users have reported problems with compulsive gambling, food addiction, sex addiction and compulsive gambling.
Abilify users have filed lawsuits against the makers of the drug because many patients have experienced these severe and life-altering Abilify side effects. These users claim that they did not have a problem with these behaviors before they began taking Abilify, but now as a result, their lives have been changed. They believe that it was the responsibility of the drug makers to warn patients and doctors of the possibility of these Abilify side effects.
In Europe and Canada, drug makers have been ordered to include warnings on the boxes of Abilify about the potential risks of compulsive gambling.
Patients who report these adverse side effects also report a lessening or complete cessation of symptoms when the drug is stopped. However, for many it may not be soon enough because the addictive side effects have already affected their lives in irreversible ways. Rexulti could be linked to similar side effects because of the similarities it shares with Abilify.
Some patients could experience serious harm due to Rexulti side effects. If you or someone you love has experienced Rexulti side effects or Abilify side effects like compulsive behavior, you may be eligible to file an Abilify or Rexulti lawsuit. An experienced attorney may be able to discuss your options with you. Patients may qualify for compensation for the costs of addiction treatment for gambling, shopping or sex, the costs of gambling or shopping debt, emotional injuries, and loss of quality of life.
In general, Rexulti and Abilify lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
