Apple Watches not carbon neutral as advertised, class action says
A group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple in late February over claims the company falsely advertised three of its Apple Watches as carbon neutral.
The group of plaintiffs claims in the class action lawsuit that the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are not carbon neutral as advertised, due to Apple’s claims allegedly primarily being based on two faulty carbon offset projects.
“Instead, these projects, which account for the vast majority of Apple’s claimed carbon offsets, are ineffective and redundant, representing neither real carbon offset value nor legitimate environmental benefits,” the Apple class action argues.
The consumers claim Apple is ultimately able to charge a premium price for the Apple Watches due to its allegedly false and misleading claims about their carbon neutrality.
Apple Watch bands contain harmful PFAS, class action claims
A group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple in January over claims certain of its Apple Watch bands contain toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that are harmful to humans and the environment.
The class action lawsuit argues Apple falsely advertises that the Apple Watch bands are healthy and safe to use, despite them allegedly containing the PFAS.
“Defendant purposely implemented a pervasive and widespread marketing campaign across all media channels for the Products, focusing on health, well-being, and environmental sustainability,” the Apple class action alleges.
The consumers claim the allegedly excessive levels of PFAS in the Apple Watch bands end up being absorbed through the skin of Apple Watch users during daily use.
Apple to pay $20M to end claims it sold defective Apple Watches
Apple recently agreed to pay $20 million to resolve claims the company made and sold certain Apple Watches containing a defect that causes them to be prone to damaging battery swelling.
The settlement benefits a nationwide class of consumers who own or owned a first-generation, Series 1, Series 2 or Series 3 Apple Watch and are reflected in Apple’s records as having reported battery-swelling issues between April 24, 2015, and Feb. 6, 2024.
Consumers claimed Apple manufactured the Apple Watches without enough space to allow for a normal amount of battery swelling, causing the devices to become damaged and leading to costly repairs.
No claim form was required to benefit from the class action settlement, while a final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for April 10, 2025.
Apple pays $95M over claims it violated consumer privacy with Siri devices
Apple recently agreed to pay $95 million to end claims the company violated the privacy of consumers with its Siri voice-activation devices.
The settlement benefits a nationwide class of consumers who own or owned a Siri-equipped device from Sept. 17, 2014, to the present.
Consumers claimed their privacy was violated by Apple’s Siri voice-activation devices allegedly recording them without their consent and storing and sharing their private conversations.
Class action investigating if Apple Arcade games caused gaming addiction
Individuals with children exhibiting symptoms of gambling addiction due to playing Apple Arcade games may be eligible to join a class action lawsuit.
The class action lawsuit investigation is looking into determining whether Apple injured its child users with games allegedly intentionally designed to be addictive, including through the instant gratification they offer.
Children who become addicted to Apple Arcade games can potentially develop a number of physical, social and mental side effects, including headaches, eye strain, depression, anxiety and social phobia, among other things, according to the class action lawsuit investigation.
