Certified Maine oyster dealers Chatham Shellfish Co. and Island Creek Oysters issued recalls for oysters linked to four campylobacter illnesses.

The oysters linked to the illnesses were harvested from two sites within harvest area MA SC28, Lewis Bay on July 1 and July 3, according to a recall notice posted by the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC).

The recall, meanwhile, involves all oysters harvested from the two lease sites in SC28 between July 1-18, 2024.

The harvest area was closed by the Maine Division of Marine Fisheries on July 19, according to the notice, which said the agency is currently conducting “a growing area of investigation.”

MDPH alerting shellfish authorities in states that received recalled Maine oysters

The recalled Maine oysters were distributed to retailers in California, Connecticut, Florida, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Illinois, according to the recall notice.

The ISSC said the Maine shippers of the recalled oysters — which have since been consumed or destroyed — have reached out to out-of-state retail establishments who have received them.

The Maine Department of Public Health (MDPH), meanwhile, said it is alerting the shellfish authorities in the states that received the recalled oysters.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a separate recall last year for oysters harvested by Future Seafoods Inc. on Oct. 10 at Area PE9B and distributed to customers Oct. 10-16, over concerns they came in contact with salmonella and unacceptable levels of E. coli.

These oysters were harvested in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Not Maine. My brother is an oyster buyer on Cape Cod and buys from SC28.
