“Steam” Online Gaming Hack Class Action Lawsuit
By Kimberly Mirando

A federal class action lawsuit claims Valve Corp. failed to protect the personal and financial information of more than 35 million people who signed up for its online gaming program “Steam” when it was hacked on November 6, 2011.
According to the Valve Corp. class action lawsuit, Valve failed to take reasonable security measures, failed to establish reasonable firewalls and failed to encrypt users’ private information, which directly resulted in third parties gaining unauthorized access to the private and/or financial information of millions of consumers.
This personal information included user names, passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and credit card information.
To make matters worse, the Steam class action lawsuit continues, Valve knew that Steam had been hacked into but “failed to immediately warn customers about the full extent of the security breach” until four days later.
As a result of Valve Corp.’s negligence, Steam users have been harmed and will continue to suffer damages and injuries, including potential credit fraud, loss of data, an inability to access various gaming networks, and more, the Steam class action lawsuit states.
The Steam data theft class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all U.S. residents who subscribed to Valve’s “Steam” services as of November 6, 2011. It is also seeking to represent a subclass of all California residents who purchased goods or services through Steam’s online system as of the same date.
The Steam hack class action lawsuit is seeking class certification, actual and/or compensatory damages, restitution and equitable relief, court costs and attorneys’ fees.
