Philip Morris settlement overview:

  • Who: Philip Morris and Stop & Shop Supermarkets settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of a Massachusetts woman who died of lung cancer.
  • Why: The family alleged the woman developed lung cancer after smoking Marlboro cigarettes for decades.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in Massachusetts state court.

Tobacco company Philip Morris and Stop & Shop Supermarkets reached a settlement with the family of a Massachusetts woman who died of lung cancer in 2022 after smoking Marlboro cigarettes for decades.

The Philip Morris settlement puts an end to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the husband and daughters of the woman, Lisa Morris, against the tobacco company and the supermarket chain. Details of the settlement were not disclosed, reports Law360.

The lawsuit argued Morris started smoking Marlboro cigarettes as a preteen after being given a free sample at a county fair in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the early 1970s. The family argued the free sample was part of a marketing strategy by Philip Morris to target young consumers.

Philip Morris argued deceased woman aware of risks of smoking

Philip Morris and Stop & Shop argued Morris, who worked in the medical field, was aware of the risks of smoking and had seen a family member die of lung cancer. The defense also argued Morris could have quit smoking, as she had done periodically in the past, reports Law360.

The complaint originally named R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a defendant, but the company was dropped earlier this month due to a lack of evidence linking its products to Morris’ death, according to a court filing.

Philip Morris previously agreed to pay $10 billion in 2003 to end claims the company deceptively marketed its Marlboro Light cigarettes as safer than regular ones. The settlement was reversed in 2005 before ultimately being reinstated in 2014.

The Philip Morris settlement is In re: Morris v. Philip Morris USA Inc. et al., Case No. 2179CV00242, in the Hampden County Superior Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  2. Anon says:

They should all pay for their manipulation just so they could make big money. Facts: Tobacco companies were forced to publicly release scientific studies and internal documents in 1998. They have also been forced to publicly admit their strategies. In November 2017, tobacco companies began a court-ordered advertisement campaign admitting the variety of ways they manipulated the public, including that they designed cigarettes to be more addictive and lied about it. Four Big Tobacco companies paid for the campaign after a U.S. district judge ordered them to set the record straight with corrective statements to counter years of misleading marketing.

Please add me been smoking since 16 now 58 have tried to quit various ways would like to quit but calms my nerves

  4. Stacey says:

They should pay every state to offer patches, gum, or whatever to get people off cigarettes if they want to quit. They falsely advertise they are safe when we were kids to profit off poor low income when they were only $.79 a pack and now $8 to $11 a pack. Just pay to help get our health back since you ruined it. Florida even has free patches so do it for every state. Some people need help

  5. Adam childers says:

My father Loyd Childers passed in 2000 and there is a settlement but I’m holding the bag and an organized crime is currently being demonstrated on me and I have still yet to see any money from Phillip. Morris thanks to a system that is failing me.

  6. ROSE GONZALEZ says:

    1. David Walsh says:

Please quit you can do it! It’s not too late

  7. Sharon Black says:

I’ve smoked Marlboro red and then changed to Marlboro Lights which is now called Marlboro Gold. Had a cat scan 6 months ago and they found a couple of anomalies and I need another to check their size. I’ve been smoking since 1967-1968, 7th-8th grade as that was what my friends did when walking to and from school. My parents didn’t find out until I was married the 2nd time in 1974. I know it causes cancer, but it’s the one thing I’m truly addicted too. I tried 2mg Nicorette, but it burned my mouth. I did stop when I found out I was pregnant, but started again after their births.
